How to Help

Giving to St. John the Compassionate Mission

St. John's provides meals, support and a wide range of programs to marginalized and vulnerable individuals, in a community setting. We also operate a wholesale bakery and thrift shop to provide dignity, work experience and training for men and women, many of whom are homeless or on social assistance.

We rely upon the generosity of our caring supporters to provide these vital services. There are so many ways you can give to St. John the Compassionate Mission. This section of our Web site outlines some of the ways you can help.

The Compassionate Society
St. John’s is grateful for the tremendous support we receive from donors at all levels. Every gift makes a difference in the lives of the people who visit the Mission.

You become a member of The Compassionate Society with your gift of $1,000 or more. In appreciation of your gift, we will send you our newsletter, providing information on our activities, celebrations, needs, hopes and dreams for the future.

We invite you to join this group of generous individuals, corporations and foundations who provide a strong base of support to St. John the Compassionate Mission.

Continuing Friends Monthly Giving Program
Our Continuing Friends monthly giving program helps sustain the operations, programs and services offered at the Mission.

You can donate through our Continuing Friends program on a monthly basis for less than the cost of a cup of coffee per day, or a weekly night out at the movies. Your monthly donation can be conveniently charged to your credit card. Your gift will continue to ensure that all are provided for at St. John’s.

Memorial Fund
Funeral and cemetery expenses are beyond the means of many in our community. It can be heartbreaking to be without the financial resources to honour a loved one with a permanent grave-marker.

In 2005, the Advisory Board started a fund to cover the cost of grave-markers. Several people in our community are in the process of getting markers for their loved ones’ graves through this effort. A gift to the Memorial Fund is a gift of great kindness.

Corporate Matching Program
Many companies have a corporate matching program. Find out if your company has one. If it does, you could double the impact of your donation to St. John’s. Your Human Resources department may be able to provide you with a corporate employee matching application form.

United Way
You can donate to St. John’s by designating your United Way gift. Simply include our address and charitable registration number on your cheque or United Way form and indicate that your gift should be directed to St. John the Compassionate Mission.

Our Charitable Registration Numbers is: 89328 1832 RR 0001

Planned Giving
Giving a gift through your estate is a wonderful way to make a genuine, lasting impact. By remembering St. John’s in your Will, you can create a lasting legacy of compassion and hope.

Gifts of a specific cash amount or asset — or a percentage of the remaining estate, after you have taken care of your loved ones — are common bequest choices. Your estate and your heirs can realize significant tax advantages while your generosity will help to ensure that people who need us will continue to find acceptance solace and hope at St. John’s… today, tomorrow and in the coming years.

Gifts of Product and Gifts of Service
Although cash contributions are essential to our day-to-day operations, there are a number of ‘gifts-in-kind’ that are a great support to life at the Mission. Our Wish List ranges from laundry detergent, food, clothes, toys, and office supplies to gifts of services such as the design and printing of our communications materials. If you can help, or put us in touch with individuals who can contribute goods or services, we would be most grateful.

Volunteering
From the start, St. John’s has been a volunteer-driven organization. Our purpose is to be, and to build, an inclusive community through the gifts and the needs that each of us brings. We treasure our volunteers and offer a variety of volunteer experiences in areas such as meal service, office support, community programs, retail operations and special events.

St. John’s needs your time, your talents, your energy… and your heart. It’s a most rewarding way to make a difference.

Our Vision

We say: "If you are willing to share your life with us, we will share ours with you. We will encourage you when you mess up, help you find direction when you are not sure which way to go, hold you when you are hurting, and help you discover, strengthen and focus your gifts and abilities. We are here for the long haul."

It is not uncommon for people at St. John the Compassionate Mission to tell us, "You are the closest thing that I have to family."
